An eye examination is not like a visit to the dentist! – it is, in fact, a walk in the park designed to make what you see in the park much more of a pleasure than it perhaps has been in the past…..

The only thing some people are afraid of is giving hesitant, uncertain answers but these are expected responses that we have already allowed for and will check and double check for accuracy, so there is really nothing at all to worry about!

Your eye examination is critical in making the correct judgment on how to treat your particular problem and usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes but it is a good idea to prepare for it in advance by checking on your family history.

We will ask you about close relatives to establish whether or not the problem you have is genetic and we will also need to know about your own general health, are you having too many headaches, what medication are you on, if any, and the work you do on a daily basis. Simple questions, easy to answer.

The examination is very straightforward and also involves checking your eyesight with and without your spectacles or contact lenses, plus a couple of other simple tests calculated to find out if you are seeing as well as you are able to.

As an example, the interior of your eye will be examined using an opthalmoscope which sounds a bit unpleasant but is actually merely a torch which shines through your pupil – you don’t feel anything. Other tests cover things like eye pressures, visual fields, colour vision tests et cetera all of which are simple and without discomfort.

You will be asked to tell us which of the different lenses we present to you is better than the previous one – don’t worry about saying you are not sure. Very few people can give a positive response so we expect that answer and we have already allowed for it.

Remember you are having your eyes examined for a reason and it is up to us to find the answer to the problem.
